Mr. Chao-Cheng Mai served as the Director of the Sun Yat-Sen Graduate Institute of Social Sciences at Academia Sinica from 1987 to 1993, and was elected as an academician of Academia Sinica during its 20th Convocation in 1994. In July 2004, the Sun Yat-Sen Graduate Institute of Social Sciences and the Tsai Yuan-Pei Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences were merged to form the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences.
