During President Wu Ta-You's tenure, the Distinguished Research Fellow System was established (since 1992). The second Distinguished Research Fellow of the institute was Academician Tien-Tzou Tsong of the Institute of Physics. Tien-Tzou Tsong specialized in field ion microscopy and atomic probes, and led the Institute of Physics in pioneering research in nanotechnology through his exemplary leadership.
