Academician Kwang-Chih Chang and others, in an effort to promote the study of Taiwan history, coordinated with the Institute of History and Philology, the Institute of Ethnology, the Institute of Modern History, and the Sun Yat-Sen Graduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, pooling part of their resources to plan the Taiwan History Field Research Project. In April 1988, during the first General Assembly of Academia Sinica for the 77th fiscal year, the establishment of the "Taiwan History Field Research Office" as the executing body was approved. The Taiwan History Field Research Office had its own dedicated space, with members including Yan-Xian Zhang from the Institute of Modern History (first from left in the front row), Shih-Ching Wang (first from left in the back row), and Ying-Zhang Zhuang from the Institute of Ethnology (second from left in the back row).
