In 1955, the two-story research building of the Institute of History and Philology was completed (the original building has since been demolished and replaced by the current research building of the Institute of European and American Studies). This was the first "research building" constructed by Academia Sinica. The Institute of Botany, the Institute of Modern History, and the Preparatory Office of the Institute of Ethnology once used its second floor for offices.
