In 1996, the campus signed the "Taiwan Sub-Millimeter Array Large-Scale Astronomical Observation Project" with the Smithsonian Institution. Under this project, Taiwan constructed two telescopes and expanded the original submillimeter wave array telescopes designed by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory from six to eight. The joint observation takes place at the SMA located on Mauna Kea in Hawaii. (From left: Hsin Kuo, Kuo-Yung Lu, Yuan-Tseh Lee, Chi Yuan)
